As a parish encompassing a number of State Primary and a Secondary School and a Private School, APWB has an obligation to support the chaplaincy ministries that are associated with those schools. School Chaplaincy falls within the Outreach Portfolio of the church.
Each year the APWB budget includes support for chaplaincy along with other mission giving.
For many years now, the APWB has had a representative on the Local Chaplaincy Committee at Wellington Point High School. From time to time APWB has given assistance with the Tuesday breakfast programme which runs from 7:30am to 9:00am each week.
Members of the parish from time to time also provide representation at Birkdale South State School Local Chaplaincy Committee.
Sadly not all schools within the parish have the benefit of a chaplain.
Many of the School Chaplains share their ministry between two schools; as current funding is insufficient for full-time ministry.
School Chaplaincy is funded partly from the local church communities and partly by the Federal Government’s National School Chaplaincy Programme. This Government funding has allowed for huge growth in the number of schools which now have a chaplaincy presence.
Many of the School Chaplains are coordinated through Scripture Union Queensland.
A quote from the Scripture Union Queensland Chappy website states: “School chaplains are in the prevention and rescue business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, depression and suicide. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and those who just need a friend.
Almost 50% of Qld state schools have a chappy…
That leaves over 600 state schools without a chappy!
SU Qld has placed chappies in 40% of all Queensland state primary schools and in 80% of all Queensland state high schools.
Right now, our chappies are serving over 330,000 Qld students.”
Let’s “keep the fire burning!”
